A.I. Summary

wnylibrarian

Out of curiosity I decided to dump one of my short stories I uploaded to Reedsy Prompts (Wótehda) into ChatGPT to see what kind of comparisons it can give me to other short stories. I’m sharing these results below. One of the things that ChatGPT couldn’t know is that as part of the contest I am limited to 3000 characters, and while that is not an excuse, it does provide a little confinement in terms of being able to fully adopt certain clarifying elements. For example, ChatGPT suggests creating a scene involving, “a difficult customer.” This is an example of something that cannot be done because there isn’t enough room for the prose to breathe — the story is only a few sentences away from the 3K mark, and therefore can’t be done.

Another aspect to keep in mind is that I only wrote this short story for the personal challenge. As such, I really didn’t put a whole lot of thought into a plot or narrative. Wótehda is simply based on some of my past experiences and individuals I’ve met over the years, and Normand Gaultier is merely a composite of them.

For additional comparison, I also gave ChatGPT the James Bond short story, 007 In New York, because it was one of the shortest and easiest to upload and was similar in terms of length. However, it is a completely different type of story altogether, and so this wasn’t exactly comparing the same type of fruit. I was wondering what ChatGPT would have to say of something that has actually been published. Results of both are below.

Feedback is always good, even from AI. However, something I have repeatedly stated, and I will do so again, is that I write for myself and other humans; not to appease any bot. So whether human or A.I., I take such summaries with a grain of salt when I self-evaluate against a greater context. As long as the positive comments (if any) come from people then I feel I’m doing something right. Writing is as much about an author’s voice as it is their prose. AI has a habit of homogenizing that to a fault, and an author’s voice is something that should never be suppressed.

You can let me know in the comments if, after reading Wótehda, you agree with the A.I. summary or not.
